Introduction
Strata Water Solutions commenced operations in 1995 in response to a change in the water rating system in South Australia. The “user pays” system created anomalies in the Strata Title unit environment where owners received an account based on a “shared meter” and total water usage was apportioned on an arbitrary basis generally equally or by unit entitlement.
The inequities in this method of charging were apparent to the three business partners all of whom worked at SAWater (or E & W S Department) as Accountants and Administrative Officers.
The first meter was installed in February 1995
Business Objectives
To install “sub meters”, read the meters and create accounts based on the private meter readings thereby allowing unit owners to pay for the water they use and not to subsidise others. The price of the service provided to be based on a small margin to generate a high level of demand and to create an affordable alternative option to an SAWater meter.
Outcomes
The business has grown rapidly. Sub meters are installed in most suburbs in the Metropolitan area, in shopping centres, in new Community developments, in Lifestyle Villages and in Regional South Australia – Roxby Downs, Whyalla, Robe, Port Augusta. They are read manually and electronically. They include electricity meters, hot water meters and recycled water meters.
Strata Water Solutions receives very good support from SAWater, Corporation Managers and Developers.
The continuing emphasis on water restrictions, management of scarce resources and rapidly increasing water charges have also contributed significantly to the expansion of the business.
